Aggression is a very common behaviour problem that is sees in dogs, Unfortunately, it is also one of the most alarming. When your dog growls over the food bowl, lunges at another dog, or snaps at a visitor, it can be a scary situation. However, there are a number of myths about aggressive dogs that are outdated, misleading, or just wrong. These myths make things very confusing if you have an aggressive dog and aren’t sure what to do.

Read on to learn about two of the most common myths about aggression in dogs, and what the facts truly are.

Aggressive Dogs Are Just Dominant

This first myth is one that is commonly spread because of outdated information. It was once believed that aggressive dogs were asserting their dominance over humans, and needed a more dominant reaction to keep them in their place. This could not be further from the truth. In fact, it is now understood that almost all aggressive dogs are acting in this way due to fear or anxiety.

This means when a human responds with even more aggressive behaviour, they are simply making the dog more fearful. This vicious cycle makes aggressive behaviour worse over time. Remember, when an aggressive dog barks, growls, or even bites, it is most likely that dog’s way of trying to defend itself against something they find scary or uncomfortable.

Aggressive Dogs Just Need Obedience Training

There is nothing wrong with training your dog. However, there is a common misconception that obedience training will stop dogs from being aggressive. This simply is not true. There are countless dogs who are incredibly well trained but are still considered to be aggressive dogs. This is because obedience training does not address the triggers of aggression. Learning how to sit, lay down, or shake has no impact on what makes your dog aggressive. It is very important to remember that aggression is an emotional issue, not a training issue.
